Voici un “reader's digest” de mon parcours. Je suis Melvyn George Fishel.
Je parle couramment Français, Néerlandais et Anglais. Il m'arrive d'utiliser les trois dans la même phrase. Je me débrouille un peu dans quelques autres langues mais juste assez pour survivre. J'habite une maison avec jardin dans la proche banlieue Est de Bruxelles.
J'ai étudié Chimie-Physique à l'université. J'ai appris l'électronique par la suite pour construire les appareils de mesure dont ma recherche avait besoin (mais qui n'existaient pas encore dans le commerce).
J'ai été assistant et chercheur à l'unif ULB et à la VUB (oui les deux). J'ai fait de la photoélectronspectroscopie et joué avec la supraconductivité. Ce sont des noms qui impressionnent, mais je peux vous expliquer si vous voulez. Comme tout chercheur, j'ai publié des articles scientifiques et techniques.
J'ai été élu membre du conseil d'administration de l’université VUB. C'était plutôt politisé. On me prenait parfois pour un gauchiste, parfois pour un libéral, mais toujours pour un têtu et avec sa propre vision.
J'ai ensuite fait de la recherche à la faculté de médecine à Bordet et à l'hôpital de Jette en cardiologie. J'ai développé un "cardiocomputer" que l'université a breveté.
Après une bonne dizaine d’années, j'ai quitté l'université pour travailler pour une firme (basée à Silicon Valley en Californie) qui fabrique des puces d'ordinateurs et des interfaces graphiques (AMD).
J'ai ensuite rejoint une société (basée au New Jersey) créée par des collègues de chez AMD. Cette firme est devenue le moteur de la messagerie vocale en téléphonie grand-public (Dialogic).
Après la naissance de mes enfants, pour passer moins de temps dans les avions et plus auprès de ma famille, j'ai créé une mini-entreprise ici pour développer et commercialiser du logiciel vocal de télécommunication (Xentec). Les détestables menus vocaux au téléphone du genre “pour effacer tapez 1, pour laisser un message tapez 2” c'est en partie moi le coupable. Je me suis maintenant désengagé du boulot, mais je continue à bidouiller.
Je suis hétéro. J'ai été marié plus de 20 ans. Je suis divorcé. J'ai deux enfants adultes de 30 et 27 ans. Je suis encore toujours un papa poule. Je cuisine avec beaucoup d'ail et d'épices et je carbonise très bien tous les plats.
Je bois très peu et en compagnie seulement, au resto ou quand j'invite. Je ne fume pas (j'ai horreur de ça).

J’aime les traditions et les cultures différentes mais pas les croyances hystériques, les nationalismes médiévaux ou les tabous. Je déteste la routine et j'aime créer, inventer des solutions et bricoler. Je suis très blagueur et taquin. Je fais souvent de l'autodérision, c’est dans ma nature. Je raffole des câlins et je suis romantique. Je communique beaucoup et sans tabous.

This is a “reader's digest” of my life. My name is Melvyn George Fishel.
I speak fluent French, Dutch and English. I sometimes use all three in the same sentence. I manage somewhat in a few other languages but barely enough to survive. I live in a house with a garden in the eastern suburbs of Brussels.
I studied Physical Chemistry at the uni. I then learned electronics to build the lab devices my research required (but which were not yet available commercially).
I was an assistant and research fellow at the ULB and VUB universities (yes both). I worked in photoelectronspectroscopy and played with superconductivity. These fields sound impressive, but I can explain it all to you if you want. Like any research scientist, I published scientific and technical papers.
I was elected by my colleagues to the board of directors of the VUB University. I remember it was rather politicized. I was sometimes taken for a leftist, sometimes for a liberal, but always for a stubborn guy with his own vision.
I then moved on and did research in cardiology engineering at the Faculty of Medicine (in Bordet and at the Jette hospital). I developed a "cardiocomputer" which the university patented.
After a good ten years, I left fundamental research to work for a US company (based in Silicon Valley, California) that manufactured computer chips and graphics interfaces (AMD).
After a few years I joined a company (based in New Jersey) created by colleagues I had met at AMD. This company (Dialogic) was at the heart of voice mail applications in consumer telephony.
After the birth of my children, in order to spend less time on airplanes and more with my family, I started a small-business in Belgium to develop and market voice software for telecommunications (Xentec). I am partly to blame for the much-disliked voice menus over the phone like “to erase type 1, to leave a message type 2”. I have now withdrawn from active work, but I continue to develop new things. That’s my nature.
I'm hetero and have been married for over 20 years. I'm divorced now. I have two adult and independent children aged 30 and 27. I'm still take good care of my grown-up babies.
I drink very little and only when accompanied, either at the restaurant or when I invite. I don't smoke (I hate that).
If I cook, it’s with lots of garlic and spices and I am quite good at carbonizing all dishes.
I have a lot of hobbies and interests. I quote some in disorder:

I like different traditions and cultures, but I do not like hysterical beliefs, medieval nationalisms or taboos. I hate routine and love to create, invent solutions and tinker. I joke and tease often. I also make fun of myself, it's in my genes. I love hugs and I am a hopeless romantic. I communicate a lot and without taboos.

Ik heb Fysische Scheikunde gestudeerd aan de uni. Ik leerde daarna elektronica om de laboratoriumapparaten te kunnen bouwen die mijn onderzoek nodig had (maar die nog niet in de handel verkrijgbaar waren).
Ik was assistent en research fellow aan de ULB en de VUB universiteiten (ja allebei). Ik werkte in foto-elektronspectroscopie en speelde met supergeleiding. Deze velden klinken indrukwekkend, maar als u wilt kan ik het u allemaal uitleggen. Zoals elke onderzoekswetenschapper heb ik wetenschappelijke en technische artikelen gepubliceerd.
Ik ben door mijn collega's verkozen om in de raad van bestuur van de VUB te zetelen. Ik herinner me dat het nogal gepolitiseerd was. Soms werd ik voor een linkse gehouden, soms voor een liberaal, maar altijd voor een koppige kerel met zijn eigen visie.
Daarna ging ik verder en deed ik onderzoek in cardiologisch bioengineering aan de Faculteit Geneeskunde (in Bordet en in het Jette-ziekenhuis). Ik ontwikkelde een 'cardiocomputer' waarvoor de universiteit een patent heeft gekregen.
Na ruim tien jaar verliet ik het fundamenteel onderzoek om te gaan werken voor een Amerikaans bedrijf (gevestigd in Silicon Valley, Californië) dat computerchips en grafische interfaces maakte (AMD).
Na een paar jaar trad ik toe tot een bedrijf (gevestigd in New Jersey) opgericht door collega's die ik bij AMD had ontmoet. Dit bedrijf (Dialogic) stond aan de basis van voicemailtoepassingen in consumententelefonie.
Na de geboorte van mijn kinderen, om minder tijd in vliegtuigen en meer met mijn gezin door te brengen, begon ik een klein bedrijf in België om spraaksoftware voor telecommunicatie te ontwikkelen (Xentec) en op de markt te brengen. Ik ben gedeeltelijk verantwoordelijk voor de verfoeide spraakmenu's aan de telefoon, zoals "druk 1 om het bericht te wissen, druk 2 om een boodschap te laten". Ik heb me nu teruggetrokken uit het actieve werk, maar ik blijf nieuwe dingen ontwikkelen. Dat is mijn aard.
Ik ben hetero en al meer dan 20 jaar getrouwd. Ik ben nu gescheiden. Ik heb twee volwassen, onafhankelijke en werkende kinderen van 30 en 27 jaar. Ik zorg nog steeds goed voor mijn volwassen baby's.
Ik drink heel weinig en alleen in gezelschap, op het restaurant of als ik thuis uitnodig. Ik rook niet (ik haat dat).
Als ik kook, is het met veel knoflook en kruiden en ik ben best goed in het carboniseren van alle gerechten.
